Purple Hair 101

As someone who has had purple hair for over three years, I've learned some tips and tricks over time. One of the most common questions I'm asked about is how often I have to redye my hair. My answer is every 2-3 months, and mostly because my roots really start to show by then. So here is everything you need to know about having purple hair (or alt hair colors in general).

1. Stop washing your hair so much. I wash mine once a week. If your hair gets oily, dry shampoo is your friend. I like Batiste, personally. You can buy it at Target/Walmart/Amazon, etc. Shampooing your hair gets rid of oils and color, and you should really just stop using it so much already! ;) My girl @mercidarci has a whole insta series on how to train your hair to go longer in between washes.

2. Don't wash your hair in hot water. I legit hate cold water and I just can't really handle it anymore, so I essentially aim for luke-warm water temperature. Hot water opens or lifts your hair cuticle, essentially shedding color like an invisible snake skin.

3. Use sulfate-free hair products. Sulfates are your enemy, remember that. Here are the current shampoo and conditioner I'm using (no affiliate links, who do you think I am? a hotshot?!?)

4. Wash your hair separately from when you shower. It's just easier, trust me. Wash it in a tub or the kitchen sink. Shower with a shower cap. And I also use gloves when I wash my hair, so my hands and nails don't turn purple. Bleach is your friend for cleaning any color stains out of your tub.

5. OVERTONE. I tell EVERYONE about this conditioner. It is a game changer. It deposits color and keeps it revived with every wash. I just buy the Go Deep weekly treatment, and use it the one time a week I wash my hair. Shampoo and condition as normal, and then get your overtone on. It will extend the life of your color like.....forever. If you're already blonde, you can use their conditioner to dye your hair. I will say, this is probably the most expensive hair product I buy ($29/jar), but it is absolutely worth it. The Go Deep jar probably lasts me about 3 months, and keeps my hair looking vibrant. JUST BUY IT ALREADY, ok?!

6.  Use quality color to begin with. I use the Pravana Vivids line. I go to my hairdresser every 2-3 months to have her bleach my roots, apply color to the roots, and then pull it down through all my hair to ensure a nice evenly fresh color. Research color lines and ask your hairdresser friends what they recommend. Stalk alt-hair girls or hairdressers online to see what they use, and how the colors look.

7. Similar to #6, if you have to bleach your hair first (like me), GO TO A PROFESSIONAL. Please don't bleach it yourself. I tried to bleach my ends one time by myself, and that hair turned into mush and I had to cut it all off. Not a good look. To keep your hair healthy and looking awesome, you need to go to a legit hairdresser to have it bleached.

8. Black is your friend. I wear black or dark colored tops for the first couple weeks after fresh dye. Light colored shirts will turn purple wherever your hair is touching. If you have short hair, however, then you have it made.

9. Pillowcases. They will get color on them. I use white pillow cases, so you can bleach them if they're ever getting stained. Or you could use a dark color, or the same color as your hair. I know, I'm a problem solver ;)

10. Rock your hair color like there's no tomorrow. It is insane the amount of people who tell me they wish they had the courage to dye their hair, because they love it but just "can't pull it off" or "are scared" or whatever justification they have stashed away. If you want alt hair, just GO FOR IT. If you hate it or you can't get your dream job because of it, WHATEVER. You can dye it back. Or wear a wig. Whatever...you have options!! Have fun and experiment! Live your life!

I have wanted purple hair for years. A couple years ago I did purple ends, but it wasn't the same as all purple hair. I hadn't ever done it because purple is so high maintenance. It fades like crazy, and dyes everything purple. But after Miss Emily used photoshop to give me purple hair in a family photo, I made up my mind. I'm not getting any younger, so I was all in: PURPLE HAIR IT IS!!

I told my friend Natalie (who is a hairdresser) my grand plans, and asked her to help me. She graciously agreed (yay!). We bleached my hair, which took a lot of work since I had dyed my hair dark after George was born. Then we used a purple dye that we thought would work really well. And......it didn't :( It turned my hair back to black with a blue sheen. We knew all of this was an experiment, so we just considered it a little setback and did some more research. I stripped my hair, we bleached it again (also a lot of work, to get the black/blue out...eeks...). Thankfully Natalie knows what she's doing and my hair was not fried!! And because we knew Manic Panic worked, that's what we used. VOILA, PURPLE HAIR!!! This was all just before Christmas, so I've had purple hair for about 3.5 months now. Here are some of the pics that were taken back in December of my new purple hair :)

For anyone who is considering going purple, I will tell you what I've found out along the way... Manic Panic fades like CRAZYYYY! Without even washing it, it would fade more with each passing day. I had Natalie re-dye it a few times, but felt like I was almost always walking around with faded hair. Finally we did some more research (who knew purple hair could make you research so much?! haha) and saw a lot of vibrant purple hair online that was dyed with Pravana. Of course, that dye isn't sold in my town. But Natalie picked some up for me when she went to Saint George, and we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.

When I first washed out the Pravana I got really nervous because it looked like it went pretty dark. Compared to my faded Manic Panic hair, it was dark. But boy was it VIBRANT!! It's so perfect, and I'm in love with it. I've had the Pravana in for about a month, and haven't had to redye it yet!  I do mix in a little bit of dye with my conditioner, which seems to help keep the vibrancy up a bit between washes.

Even though everything is purple now (my pillowcase, my neck, my hands after I straighten my hair, the backs of my shirts, etc), it's totally worth it. I love my purple hair and I'm so glad I have awesome friends like Natalie who help all my hair dreams come true!! ;) It's pretty funny because now purple hair seems completely normal to me, and I often forget that it isn't actually super common. Or I just completely forget that my hair is purple. And then I get some really odd looks/stares in public and I'm like "What the heck are they looking at?? Is there chocolate on my face? Ohhh...right..". My favorite reactions are always from kids, who get really excited and intrigued. There have been several instances where kids will yell out to their parents "Mom [and/or Dad]! Look! She has purple hair!!!" It's pretty adorable.

hair today, gone tomorrow...again?!

on sunday i made a bad decision... i bleached my own hair. you know how the ends were purple? that's because we had bleached them before and then put in the purple. i was waiting a while with the intention of getting them bleached again so the purple would be brighter the next time i applied it. so i got a bleach kit from Sally's, and had some extra time on sunday.......things did not go so well, and i ended up with fried poodle hair.

moral of the story: DO NOT BLEACH YOUR OWN HAIR AT HOME!!! it's worth the drive and the extra money to not ruin your hair. thankfully i wasn't bleaching allllll of my hair, or i would be bald right now. it was mildly traumatic, and there may have been a few tears shed. i'm sort of obsessed with my [now non-existant] long hair. thankfully one of my neighbors does hair and was available on short notice, and came to my rescue with a cute haircut. at least eight inches of hair were cut off, if not more :(

last night i dyed the ends purple again, so instead of the blond its now a deep purple. i'm trying to get used to having short hair again. long hair was my signature look! and i honestly just do not look as good with shorter hair. but i'm trying to rock it, and just waiting for it to grow out.

the one nice thing? washing my hair takes like 2 seconds. i can handle that :)

i'm bored with my hair. i was just telling josh that my hair hasn't been this tame since highschool... also, i have wanted purple hair for years! i've had purple extensions before and i LOVED them, but of course extensions aren't permanent :/  while browsing on pinterest for hair beauty, i found the following styles that i am lusting after. again, i have no idea how people work like 50-60 hours a week and still blog. no idea. anyways, here is me playing catch up!

also, this weekend we painted like CRAZY. my hands/arms were hurting! we finished all the paint on the first floor (yay!), and did the accent wall in the bedroom. here is a sneak peek of the bedroom so far:

and lastly, i played hairdresser tonight. josh has been growing his hair out since christmas, partly because we were in arizona for a month, and partly because i wanted to see what it would look like. of course he was cute, but it kind of drove him crazy (he's a little ocd...)

between friday and monday we went to the movies 3 times. check out our review blog to see our thoughts. i made pizza saturday. we had macaroni grill monday. tonight i got my hurr done (dyed, trimmed, purple extensions put back in), and i learned how to curl my hair with a hair straightener. i've been told how to before, but i needed one-on-one help haha. and now i know!! i told my hairdresser (hi girl!) to make me look like kim kardashian...

so you know my 4 simple goals? and one of them was to buy less and make more? i used this super easy tutorial to make an elastic waist skirt. this skirt cost me like 3 or 4 bucks to make, and only took maybe 30 minutes or so (i'm a slow iron-er). i was excited to take it for a spin today at church:

andddd...yesterday i got purple extensions put in! they are so much fun and i love them. they aren't super noticeable so it's fun when they come peeking out. and they match my nail polish right now haha.

when i was getting them put in everyone in the salon kept coming over to feel my long thick hair. they asked where i worked and when i told them the forest service they were like "what?? you dont look like you work for the forest service... maybe you should have gotten forest green extensions" haha. it was kind of funny. anyways, if you live in utah you should go see allison at capelli. she is awesome! she works at a hair school so she can get more hours [she's a certified stylist in another state but utah requires more hours to work here]. i definitely recommend her though, she is super cute and nice, and obviously really good at hair.

i cut my hair [on friday]. only like 2 inches though. so hopefully all those dratted split ends are gone, and it's a nice length. definitely not borderline gross anymore haha. and i dyed it so it's all one nice color again. farewell, roots! so...i took this haircut opportunity to turn in into an outfit post. josh was, of course, thrilled. ok, well he might have been simultaneously shooing me away while watching to catch a predator (addicting!), but he managed to snap a few pics haha.

yesterday i went with my friend to a local antique/plant/crafty shop. i don't know how to explain it, i just like it. i've gone before and scored some nice stuff, that you can see in this post. i ended up buying an old vogue pattern, a lot of vintage lace, vintage buttons, and some awesome hankerchiefs. i have some ideas for these beauties, and i will keep you posted. [they also relate to one of my goals!] unfortunately i had a ten dollar limit (hello, medical bills!) so i was unable to get some other awesome things. like these:

then tonight we went and had a birthday dinner at josh's parents house. josh turns the big 2-6 this month, and my little niece sunny turns 6. it was a great time. unfortunately...i didn't take out my camera. oops! it was fun though and we had some delish fish and chips! it's so nice having good seafood (i'm from maine, you know...comes with the territory). so thanks for the fun birthday bash, in-laws! we had an awesome time ♥

ANYWAYS, to the real story. a lot of people lately have been telling me how long my hair is. i think this translates to "ew jess, your hair has reached the too long stage." you know what i mean, right? like when someones hair is too long and it's gross looking? and you're like ew, go cut your hair already! hopefully i haven't reached that stage [tell me if i have!]. however, this friday i am going to get it trimmed and colored, so i'll have them take off an inch or two. here it is in all its [straightened] glory:

sneaking in a post!

so yesterday we saw the movie date night (review to come soon!), and it was hilarious. the thing of it is they think they're this old boring married couple, or as someone else put it "just really excellent roommates." then i got to thinking about me and josh. are we that boring married couple that's stuck in our ways? i know we havent been married that long (2 years next month) but i worry we need more adventure or something. do you ever feel like that? (married or otherwise). i sense a vegas trip coming soon... :]

anyways, i'm not supposed to be blogging right now because i have homework to do, but ive gotten into an irregular blogging schedule lately (i apologize) and i dont like it. also, i found this picture in my phone that josh must have taken a while ago. isnt it sweet?

hair secrets

ok, so lately i have been getting a lot of comments about my hair, much to my surprise. i mean i love my hair, but its different when other people make comments about it too. ive even had people ask to touch it because it looks so soft. and then i awkwardly go "umm...ok" and sit there while they caress my hair. but anyways, since people have been asking about it so much i decided to just do a little blog about it.

so, my number one hair secret is....i never wash it. i maybe wash it once every 3 months. sometimes four months. ok, thats a lie, but i'm just preparing you so you're less grossed out when i tell you the truth. i only wash my hair once a week. thats the truth. and i really think it has a lot to do with how my hair looks. i dye and straighten and sometimes blow dry my hair and yet everytime i go in to get it done the hairdressers always say how healthy my hair is. i was just blessed with not really getting greasy hair, so i can go a week without washing it. and i dont work out or sweat or roll in dirt, so its never really gross. if you do have greasy hair, theres hair powder you can use. i have also heard that corn starch works, and doesnt appear white or anything (like baby powder can).

now, on to the products i use. i am a big paul mitchell fan. i wash my hair with paul mitchell's color protect shampoo and conditioner. i also use their super charged moisturizer, which helps with my dry scalp and my tangly hair. after i get out the shower i put a whole bunch of gunk in my hair:


super skinny serum (closes your cuticle to help get it nice and straight)
quick slip (helps w/styling, and reduces drying time--a big plus since my hair takes FOREVER to blow dry)
regis designline 'press it' (heat protection for blowdrying, etc)
and then after its dry, before i straighten it, regis designline 'get it pressed' (heat protection/styling for straightening)

i love all of these products. the regis ones are only sold in regis salons, and they work really well. i highly recommend them. when i let my hair air dry (usually twice a month) i still use all the products, to help it be more manageable. and i always straighten my hair, so heat protection stuff is important. i use an ionic hair straightener that i bought at sally's. a professional hair straightener will make a world of difference in your life. i know, cuz i used to use the cheap-o hot tools or conair types, and my hair was only reduced to a a slighty-poofy mess (vs full blown frizzy afro).

anyways, thats pretty much all i do for my hair. only wash it once a week, blow dry it about 2 times a month, straighten it all the time, and use a ton of product. also, you should regularly get your hair trimmed (like every 6-10 weeks) and always get your color done at a salon. box color will fry your hair and you will have serious damage. dont do that to yourself. even just go to a hair school and have them do it so it will be cheaper, but your hair will love your for it. i promise.

we got married in may 2008, then i cut my hair off. im glad i waited til after our wedding, because then my hair looked good for my pictures haha. when i cut it...it was...questionable.

so it was cut on a diagonal, with the shortest being what is seen on the right side of my face (when you're looking at the picture. it isnt behind my back or anything, it's that short on that side). sometime in fall 2008 i cut my hair all the same length, and it was considerably shorter.christmas 2008 hair (all one length, but a little shorter)

that was then, this is now. weird, huh? my hair is super long and i love it. i mean, it takes FOREVER to do, but i still love it. especially when i have time to do it and make it purty.

im still alive

i made it through this work week. barely. this week has been crazy busy, and honestly it has made me ignore my apartment. everything has just gotten messier and messier in the past 4 days. it was such a huge relief when i came home from work today, looking forward to the 3 day weekend ahead :]

my sweet hubby had spaghetti ready to eat when i got home from work! afterwards, instead of taking a hot shower and a nap, i cleaned up the apartment a bit, changed clothes, and put makeup on. then i went to a church activity that was a scavenger hunt kind of deal. that was fun.

then i came home and played hairdresser and cut and dyed josh's hair. it looks bomb. i love playing hairdresser....i still have a little desire to go to hair school. maybe someday. or i will just cut josh's hair and my future kids hair for the rest of my life and be content.

i would do an outfit of the day post, but im basically wearing this same outfit tonight: [the second one shown]. maybe tomorrow since i will be deliciously sleeping in, i will be able to dress all pretty and restart my outfit du jour series.

also, my hair got fixed! hallelujah! [if you click on the last outfit picture of mine, stare at the center of my hairline and you can visibly see the red...yikes] what an ordeal.

also, new post on we review. and after today there might be a new one too because beyonces movie "obsessed" comes out today :] (so of course we have to see it!)
