how we paid off all our debt

Well, we've had some people ask us how we went about paying off all our debt... So I figured I would write a post about our personal experience, rather than emailing each person and having jumbled responses to different people. If this is completely boring to you, come back later and I'll talk about beauty supplies or something ;)

First of all, Dave Ramsey's Debt Snowball Plan is what we shaped our goals around. Before we planned to do this, we were trying to make higher payments on loans with higher interest rates. But we really weren't being very aggressive about making higher payments, and were mostly making minimum payments on all our loans. The main problem is we didn't have a definite/clear goal, and steps to work up to that goal.

To give a background, here is what we had in debt:

6 medical bills (infamous kidney stone of 2010, and having a baby)
5 student loans (Josh)
5 student loans (Jess)

This list could look very different for you. There could be credit cards, store accounts, second-mortgages, whatever. But what it comes down to is debt is debt is debt. Boo. Also, side note: we did not include our mortgage on our list of debt. If we were planning on living there for the rest of our lives, then I might. I haven't looked into what little Davey thinks about that, but mostly because I didn't want to get involved ;)

So the first step you need to take is to save up an emergency fund. Dave Ramsey suggests a $1000 emergency fund. We saved up a bit more than that so we'd feel more comfortable (considering that alone would be our mortgage payment!). The second step is to write out every bill you have, and the amount. Then organize the list from lowest amount to highest amount. Tackle your list, starting with your lowest bill, and work your way up. You can make minimum payments on all the other bills while making larger payments on the lowest bill.

i guess this is what a debt snowball looks like. gimme that money!!
Since Josh and I are both working full time, we did a little math... We made sure we could pay all of our regular monthly bills (mortgage, Dish, internet, groceries, etc) with just one of our paychecks. Since Josh makes a little more than I do (INEQUALITY IN THE WORKFORCE, WHAT!?! haha just kidding...mostly...I gave up a raise so I could cut my hours a little bit after having Henry), we chose to keep his whole paycheck to go towards our monthly expenses. My entire paycheck went to childcare and paying off debt. To make this easier for ourselves, we set up an auto-transfer to our savings account every week (that came out the day after our paychecks were deposited) of the total amount we set aside to go to loans. When it was time for us to make a big payment on a bill/loan, we would transfer that amount back to our checking account, and make the payment. That way the extra money was untouchable to us. Out of sight [of your checking account], out of mind...

For single-income families, it might be a bit more involved to figure out how much to set aside strictly for loans. You would have to be a lot better about doing a monthly budget, so you could know a definite monetary amount to allocate just to debt. Just figure out how much you need for all your monthly bills, giving a little lee-way for extra expenses that might come up, and think about what kind of lifestyle you want to have. Dave Ramsey would say every single extra penny needs to go towards debt. But what do you define as "extra"? We like to go out to eat at restaurants on the weekends and hang out with our friends. (And I like to buy candy...what?!) This factored into our monthly bills, as this is not something we wanted to give up. Shopping trips to the mall or Ikea, however, were virtually cut off. So do your budget, make some hard decisions of any "extra" things you can afford to include in that budget, and then take all the rest of your money and put it towards debt.

Once you start crossing off bills on that master list, it feels awesome! It really does make the overall goal feel that much more achievable, even if you only paid off a $300 bill. Stay consistent with your goals, and communicate about your progress with your significant other (if applicable). Talking about your accomplishments with another person increases your enthusiasm and drive, so feel free to remind eachother how amazing you are at life. Because, for reals, you're getting out of debt. You're taking control of your money and your future. Therefore, you ARE amazing at life. ;)

Best of luck, friends!! And of course, I am not an expert, nor am I pretending to be one. I am just someone who has experienced this, and would love to be your cheerleader.  Some great resources for your financial journey that we liked are Dave Ramsey's website, and Suze Orman's website. They both have tons of tools, advice, and links to additional resources. Feel free to ask us any questions, although like I said--I'm no expert!

if i were rich: marc by marc jacobs

if i was rich, i have a sneaking suspicion that my entire wardrobe would consist of marc jacobs pieces. well, a majority of my wardrobe. i think he is an amazing designer. i especially love Marc by Marc Jacobs, which is where i found all of the following:
tribal dress? yes please!

amazing jacket

who says you can't wear navy and black together?!

cardigans are one of my staples. love this whole look.

color + style = amazing!
i mean, the pictures really speak for themselves. and it's not just his individual pieces, it's the whole outfits he puts together too. i would wear any of these outfits! and i love the purse. of course i could never afford any of it, which is why it's being shown on my blog, instead of on me ;).

do you have a favorite designer?

ps: i should totally be a model for marc jacobs, right? anyone have his phone number? ;)

miracle of the week

remember my post about student loans? well our next loan we have to pay off is my hospital bill from that stupid kidney stone (that happened TWO YEARS AGO! ahhhh). over the weekend i was thinking about it and started wondering if they did a lowered payoff amount (like pay 90% of the total if you pay it all off now, for example). so yesterday morning i called the hospital billing office and asked them if they have anything like that. sadly, they did not. but the lady in the billing office started looking at my bill and said "oh, your insurance didn't pay any of this..." and i said, "no, they were terrible!". she looked into my bill further and then told me, "your insurance didn't apply any discounts at all to this bill. if that happens, the hospital can actually apply discounts to the bill. let me see what i can do..."

basically, this amazing lady was able to save us almost 70% off of our remaining balance. WHOAAAA. i was so happy i was beside myself. i kept saying thank you a billion times, and told her how this lifted such a burden from us. because, well, we aren't talking about a $500 bill, or a $2000 bill... it was [unfortunately] much more than that.

so today we called and paid off that bill, and it felt awesome. now we just have two more student loans and then we are DEBT FREE (not including our mortgage). uhhhhh-mazing! granted they are our largest/most expensive loans (we're doing the "snowball plan" a la dave ramsey), but just the fact that there are only two left seems so much more attainable.
the end is in sight. henry, someday i will be able to stay home and play with you all day!! in the meantime folks, henry is accepting donations for the cause ;)

if i were rich: shoe obsession

reason #345 i wish i was rich:

these lanvin wedges. theres a black version w/a gold heel (instead of silver) that i saw in harpers bazaar, and i want them so bad. too bad they're like $1500... if only i were beyonce and then they would just give me these shoes for free...

days 15 + 16: lets go travel the world!

DAY 15: A PICTURE OF SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO BEFORE YOU DIE
i want to go to the great wall of china! and visit china in general. although i don't think i'll like the food, i think it will be a very interesting place to visit!

DAY 16: A PICTURE OF WHERE YOU WANT TO LIVE OUT YOUR DAYS

tangalooma wild dolphin resort! i think i've blogged about this before, but i went to this island in australia when i was 17, and i fell in love with it. the water is clear and beautiful, there are wild dolphins, shipwrecks you can explore, and it is just GORGEOUS!!! i could have a nice house tucked away, right next to the beach, and it would be glorious.

oh wait...

so you know how i got my ears pierced a little while back? i think it was in august... anyways, i always forget i can wear earrings now haha. growing up i wasn't really into jewelry at all, and since college i started incorporating more into my outfits--mainly necklaces. so now i literally forget that i can wear earrings, so i usually don't even pay attention to them until it dawns on me *oh wait...i CAN look at earrings because i can actually wear them now!* haha. so anyways, here are some fun earrings i've found on etsy recently. obviously there are MILLIONS of pairs of earrings on etsy, these are just some of my recent faves:

[click picture to go to listing]
thank you kelli for pointing these lovely ones out!

i like a lot of pieces from this shop ^
stay tuned for future collaboration w/this lovely lady!

and of course, the reason i got my ears pierced:
to wear awesome earrings from made by jewls.

are you an earrings girl? how do you keep all your earrings organized? i only have like 5 pairs, and when i remember to wear them i just rotate through them, depending on what mostly matches my outfit. if you like me and want to show me your love, feel free to get any of the above for me. i will gladly accept them ;)

they had flowers and different plants that light up. these are ours, we need to buy a proper vase though, but i wanted to show you how cool they are

This shop was seriously amazing. It's a lovely mix of new and old (antiques), and one of the highlights of the shop was all the clocks. There were all kinds of clocks, it was incredible. I've shown all my favorites above, but they had so many that there were new ones in every direction you looked. I absolutely fell in love with this shop, and we probably spent a little too much money... But as Josh said, we will be going back in the future and hopefully by then it will have been long enough that we'll forget how much we spent this past time... haha. And really--if you are ever anywhere in Arizona you NEED to go to this store!!

*All photos are taken by me, with permission by store owners. If you want to use any, please ask me first. Thanks!

if i were rich... part ii

i'm beginning to think i need another blog that's just titled "if i were rich." because seriously...i wish i was. i was just telling my coworker how i am obsessed with clothes and a [little but lingering] part of me wishes i would have followed through with my high school dream of going to school for fashion merchandising. although if i had done that...where would i be? i wouldn't be here in utah with my little joshy-poo, thats for sure! which would not be cool. so instead i'll just dream about being a fashion buyer. maybe (if i were rich) i could go to school for it in the future. fashion school is expensive though!! anyways, this post is about my current fashion lusts. for your viewing pleasure:

revival house. $48. i'd totally pretend i was eleanor roosevelt in this.
(like...in my mind...)

gosh. $49.95. ah-mazing, right?
modcloth. $34.99. in the words of rachel zoe, i die. [aka i need these]

modcloth. $87.99. adorable.

gosh. $90. so mj, right? love!

i could seriously go on and on and on. those are just some current obsessions. feel free to purchase any of the above and give them to me. i will love you forever (yes, you can buy my love, ok?). also, i found multiple awesome fashion blogs today. i've been drifting in bloggy-world a lot lately and found so many great new blogs [if you're visiting from one, hello!]. i love it ♥ anyways, one fashion blogger in particular is doing a bomb-dot-com giveaway, including the store gosh (pieces above). so go check out le blog de sushi for a chance to win (but don't enter too many times...you'll lower my chances of winning...)!
