yikes...

so i e-mailed my boss last night that i wanted to quit my job. he told me to see him today after class. so i went in to talk to him and i was verrry nervous. i do not do well with any kind of confrontation, and automatically start crying. its pretty embarrassing.

so, i get in his office, and sit down. he asks me what's up. i told him that i want to focus on my school work more and no longer want to work for him. to which he responded "well, i can't make you not quit, but i really don't recommend it....It proves to this department that your word isn't reliable, and that you aren't a good worker." to which i replied, "I am a good worker, and I'm not one to normally quit a job. So i think it might actually be telling the department something else..."

then he was like what? what is the problem with this? etc etc etc.... so i kind of just went off on him. i told him he was rude and arrogant and demeaning, and he said some things to me that i hope he would never say to any of his students, because it could potentially ruin their academic career. i told him he should not tell people their GPA is not good enough to get into grad school, and that i am no longer planning on going right to grad school after i graduate so "thanks for all your encouragement." etc etc etc.

i basically just told him everything i thought, which was what he wanted me to do. at the end he said he was sincerely sorry for hurting my feelings and coming off as rude. he said he didn't want me to quit with the idea of "i don't want to work for this guy because he's rude and a jerk", which i basically told him was accurate. anyways, long story short, he said i was his best employee this semester, and that he was truly sorry and hoped i would accept his apology, etc.

i told him i would think over the weekend if i still want to quit or not. now that everything has been made clear and i finally get some feedback on my work, i am leaning more towards staying. i don't really like being the quitter anyways (as much as i pretend i dont care)

we shall see...

Man, you're brave. I cannot believe you said all of that to him. Good for you. Maybe now you can keep your job and he won't be a jerk.

Well, at least if you keep the job and he goes back to being a jerk again you won't have a problem telling him where to stick it!!!

I hope this corrects your problem with this individual. I believe you took the right approach. There is no excuse for any supervisor to exhibit such an attitude as you have described.
